Provider credentialing and payer enrollment in California
California credentialing often involves more than the health plan. Many commercial and Medi-Cal plans delegate credentialing to medical groups and IPAs, so a physician may need to be credentialed through a group before appearing in a plan directory. Medi-Cal enrollment goes through the PAVE system at the Department of Health Care Services. Blue Shield of California, Anthem Blue Cross, Health Net and regional plans each follow their own process. Physicians are licensed by the Medical Board of California.

Medical billing and revenue cycle management in California
Billing in California requires understanding who is actually responsible for payment. A claim may belong to a health plan, a capitated medical group or a county-organized Medi-Cal plan, and sending it to the wrong place is a common reason for delay. Medi-Cal managed care, Medicare Advantage and commercial HMO products all have different referral and authorization rules, so eligibility and assigned group should be verified before each visit.

California billing and credentialing questions
How does Medi-Cal provider enrollment work?
Providers apply through PAVE, the Department of Health Care Services' online enrollment system, supplying license, NPI, ownership and practice location details. Applications can be reviewed more closely depending on provider type. Once approved, you can participate in Medi-Cal fee-for-service and contract with Medi-Cal managed care plans.
Which payers should a new California practice credential with first?
It depends heavily on region, but Medicare, Medi-Cal, Blue Shield of California and Anthem Blue Cross are common starting points. Then add plans such as Health Net, Kaiser Permanente referral networks or local plans like L.A. Care Health Plan, plus the medical groups or IPAs that delegate credentialing in your area.
Do Medi-Cal managed care plans and medical groups credential separately?
Typically yes. PAVE enrollment registers you with the state, but each Medi-Cal managed care plan has its own contracting, and many delegate credentialing to medical groups or IPAs. We track each plan and group application separately so you know exactly where each one stands.
Do we need to be near Brooklyn to work with Core MB?
No. Everything runs remotely: enrollment applications, payer follow-up, claims and reporting. Practices in California get the same team, the same client portal and the same monthly reporting as a practice around the corner from our office.
